This 2-module self-assessment program explains how immunotherapies for multiple myeloma work and their unique possibilities for treatment of this cancer. This course focusses on explaining how BCMA immunotherapies work, management of their and other immunotherapies side effects, and their promise for treating relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma. The course features active needs assessments tools, self-assessment driven case studies, reflection activities, and tailored asynchronous learning content. This course also features an open-access patient journey guide that explains in patient-centred language the journey and potential experiences a patient and their family might experience when receiving immunotherapies for their disease.

Learning Outcomes

Learners in the course will update their knowledge and understanding of immunotherapies and the promising treatment options available for multiple myeloma that have vastly increased the lifespan of patients receiving this diagnosis. You’ll leave the course with knowledge of new treatment options, gold standard practices for interprofessional teams, and a patient journey guide that you can freely share with the patients and their families in your care.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

Module 01: Foundations of BCMA-Targeted Therapy for Multiple Myeloma:

Recognize the epidemiological trends and diagnostic criteria of multiple myeloma.
Identify and describe the six main therapeutic options for multiple myeloma.
Discuss an overview of BCMA-targeted immunotherapies for multiple myeloma, such as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, bispecific antibodies (BsAbs), and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), including their mechanisms of action.
Compare the advantages and disadvantages of the immunotherapy options for treating multiple myeloma.

Module 02: Toxicity Management and Interprofessional Collaboration in BCMA-Targeted Immunotherapy

Identify the information needs of patients with multiple myeloma.
Identify the interprofessional care team with a focus on the role of the oncology nurse in providing BCMA-specific patient education.
Recognize and describe the various adverse events that may occur following treatment for multiple myeloma—including Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS), Immune Effector Cell-Associated Neurotoxicity Syndrome (ICANS), ocular toxicity, and infections—focusing on their pathology, assessment, and management strategies.

Intended Audience

This course is designed for hematology and oncology physicians, nurses, and interprofessional health team members who work with bone and blood cancers. There is also a patient journey through diagnosis and treatment that is free to share with peers, patients, and their families and we encourage you to do so. We welcome patients to access the patient journey guide directly.

Accreditation Details

This online program has two modules which are each accredited by Queen’s University for 1 hour in the Section 3-Self-Assessment category for the Royal College and provides a certificate for 1 hours of professional development for all health professions.
