OPDES Affiliates

OPDES Affiliations

The mission of the OPDES is to advance health sciences educational scholarship through supporting those conducting research, and to inform both healthcare practices and education. We aim to both support leaders in educational scholarship and encourage those interested in becoming involved in educational scholarship. To that end, we promote active membership within our office through five distinct levels of affiliations:

1) OPDES Health Sciences Education Scholar

Requirements: Holds an advanced degree with a focus in health professions educational scholarship and has significant protected time for educational research.
Responsibilities: May include providing mentorship to junior researchers and Fellows; Assists in building capacity; Potential member of the OPDES Educational Scholarship Advisory Board.
OPDES Supports: Assists with human resources to support research. Provides shared workspace; Provides support for leadership development.

2) OPDES Health Sciences Education Researcher

Requirements: Faculty and staff who conduct educational research with the support of OPDES; may have an advanced degree in health professions education.
Responsibilities: May include mentorship to others interested in education scholarship; Participates in Health Sciences Education events and/or the Essentials of Education Research.
OPDES Supports: Assists with human resources to support research.

3) OPDES Health Sciences Education Research Fellow

Requirements: Individuals who are enrolled in a graduate degree or residency program with a focus in education and are supervised by one or more Education Research Scholar from OPDES. Once they have completed the program, they are expected to become either an Education Research Researcher or Scholar.
Responsibilities: Complete a graduate degree program focused on education.
OPDES Supports: Provides support for implementing the research developed through the graduate degree program; Provides mentorship; Provides shared workspace.

4) OPDES Health Sciences Resident and Student Member

Requirements: Individuals who are students in the Faculty of Health Sciences, and work as a research assistant with OPDES, and/or have an interest in educational scholarship.
Responsibilities: Conducts educational scholarship either independently or as part of a research team.
OPDES Supports: Receives OPDES invites to educational initiatives and events; Provides mentorship.

5) OPDES Affiliates Emeritus

Requirements: Held a past position of leadership or prominence in the OPDES (e.g., Directorship).

Responsibilities: May include providing guidance and/or mentorship to researchers

OPDES Supports: Assists with human resources to support research.

Reznick Scholars in Health Professions Education

Throughout his 10 years as dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Richard Reznick always encouraged faculty members, students, and staff to “ask questions, seek answers, advance care, and inspire change.” His mantra – “be restless” – fostered a spirit of inquiry and action to ensure tomorrow’s health care is better than today’s. The Reznick Scholars in Health Professions Education program honours both Dr. Reznick’s leadership and his longstanding commitment to educational scholarship.

Open to all Queen’s Health Sciences faculty members, the Reznick Scholar program recipients are awarded $20,000 over two years to develop an educational project. Over time, the faculty hopes that the recipients of the scholarship will make up a cohort of scholars committed to health professions education at Queen’s.
