The term curriculum (plural curricula) derives from the Latin word “currere” meaning the race course or runaway. This understanding is important as it conceptualizes curriculum as a journey or path which one takes to reach their goal.
In education, we define curriculum as the purposeful design or redesign of a set of connected teaching and learning experiences forming a connected whole. Any curriculum typically includes the philosophy of the program, total duration, thoughtful sequencing, and what/when/where/how content and learning experiences are being taught.
When approaching the topic of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and specifically designing inclusive curricula, you have to first acknowledge the magnitude of this topic and the breadth of perspectives that inform how it is approached.
