The surge of overdoses and opioid-related deaths in Canada is a national public health crisis.

The Government of Canada funded the AFMC, in partnership with Canada’s 17 medical schools, to create a national, bilingual, comprehensive, and competency-based curriculum for medical graduates, residents and practicing physicians interested in pain management and substance use. The evidence-based training addresses knowledge gaps in educational programs across Canada, including the diagnosis, treatment, and management of pain. In January 2021, the AFMC successfully developed and launched an Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) curriculum and building on this work, we have developed a Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) curriculum.

Now these programs have been accredited by Queen's University for both the CFPC and Royal College for up to 40 hours.

Foundational Practice

The Foundational Practice curriculum consists of 11 bilingual & interactive competency-based modules, with topics introducing and explaining the dimensions of the Canadian opioid crisis, core concepts of pain management, and opioid stewardship. Designed for health professionals seeking to expand their skills in providing care to patients with addictions, aligning with the latest standards of care.

Tailored for health professionals with established practice in addiction care, this curriculum offers the latest options and approaches for treatment, expanding your toolbox for comprehensive patient care.

Advanced Practice

This Advanced Practice curriculum consists of 8 bilingual & interactive competency-based modules. Topics address the Canadian opioid crisis, substance use disorder, and pain management, specifically designed for health professionals seeking advanced training in specialized addiction medicine strategies. Gain insights and approaches applicable to comprehensive practice, enhancing your expertise in the field.

Customizable Learning Path:

All modules in each course are accredited where learners will receive a Certificate of Completion for each module completed. We recognize that each learner has unique goals, preferences, and schedules and may prefer to complete only select modules that suit their interest and schedule. Choose your path, explore diverse topics, and collect accreditation certificates for every module you complete.

Comprehensive Course Completion:

Upon completion of all the accredited modules within the Foundational, Intermediate, or Advanced Practices course, learners will receive a Certificate of Completion for that course. In addition to obtaining the CPD credits, the certificate will set learners apart from their colleagues by having completed this curriculum and can be a highlight on their curriculum vitae.

This certificate package will fill gaps in education to ensure learners, physicians, and other health professionals across Canada have access to the latest expert-designed educational offerings in the diagnosis, treatment, management of pain, and substance use.

Bilingual, comprehensive, competency-based, pan-Canadian focused curriculum.

Through completion of the accredited modules, learners will receive a Certificate of Completion. This program offers assessment level accreditation through Mainpro+ for family physicians and Section 3 Self-Assessment accreditation through the MOC for physician specialists. Other health professionals can also claim this professional learning activity for continuing education credits.
