As we prepare for the upcoming academic year and registration period, we have put together a brief survey to streamline sub-plan declaration and advanced course selection for students entering their fourth year of the Life Sciences Program.
Please note this survey is only for advanced course selection for 4th year core and option courses, it does not include electives or 1st, 2nd or 3rd year courses. GLPH and IDIS coded courses are electives for you LIfe Sciences Honours plan units.
This will be sent to your official Queen’s email addresses and will be open from May 29th – June 16th, 2023.
If you submit multiple responses to the survey, only your FINAL (most recent) submission will be considered.
If you have any questions throughout this process, please reach out lifesci@queensu.ca .
Switching from Major to SSP or vice versa:
Would you like to switch from SSP to Major or vice versa? From May 23rd through June 30th you will need to submit a request through the Faculty of Arts and Science Change of Plan
Complete your change of plan before starting the survey, as requirements differ for SSP and MAJ students.
Course Selection:
The survey will ask you to rank your top five choices in order of preference (course, term of offering, and mode of delivery). Please ensure you have the required pre-requisites for all courses you choose. If you are missing a pre-requisite, do not choose the course during pre-selection. Take your time and ensure you follow the instructions, as we will not accept changes once you submit your preferences. You are not guaranteed your top choice, even if it is the only course that you have chosen. If there is a certain course that you want to take that has multiple offerings (term/format) in the upcoming year, you can choose multiple offerings of the course as your choices (in order of your preference) to increase your chances of getting being able to take the course.
Note: If you only choose one course, it could potentially be full by the time we reach your request. It is not first come, first serve. We will randomly work through all requests beginning with SSP students.
With no second choice available, we would then move on to the next student. After we have completed all the requests, we will send emails to students who still require courses to satisfy their degree plans and a listing of the courses that still have available spots. We will do our best to accommodate all fourth-year course requests, but our primary aim is to ensure students have the required courses to satisfy their degree requirements.
Courses you have been assigned will be preloaded into SOLUS before registration begins. Once your enrolment appointment time arrives, if you wish to change or go on a wait list, you will have to do this yourself through SOLUS. Our office will not be making any changes to your pre-selected 4th year courses.
Note: In previous years we have not seen much movement with wait lists until Open Enrolment begins and students are able to add 18.0 units per term. This begins on August 21st, 2023.
Major Students:
Core: You have no required core courses.
Option: You need 3.0 units at the 400 level or above; 15.0 units at the 300 level or above; 9.0 units at the 200 level or above; 6.0 unit any level. LISC_List_A.
Click here for revised LISC_List_A. Scroll to the bottom of the page to view List A.
We will try our best to give you two 400-level courses (if we are able to find two from your choices, unless you have only requested one 400-level course).
Specialization Students:
Core courses will be pre-loaded for you only if you select them in this survey (i.e., if you have declared the Cancer Research sub-plan you must select CANC 440 as this is a requirement of the sub-plan).
The Life Sciences Office will not be cross-referencing your sub-plan selection with your course selection to ensure you are selecting the required courses; this is your responsibility.
Due to limited enrolments, if you drop a core course there is no guarantee that we will be able to re-enrol you. You will need to go on the wait list until there is an opening in the course, which may affect the completion of your degree.
Attention: The requirement of 3.0 units from PHAR 380/3.0 or PHAR 450/3.0 has been removed from all sub-plans, however this will not be reflected in the Academic Calendar until after June 15th.
Important to remember CORE first; OPTION second; ELECTIVES third.
