Sociodemographic (identity) data provides important information on the different groups represented by Queen's students, faculty, and staff. This guide provides useful tips on how to improve the use and collection of identity data to better support EDIIA initatives.

Most data are collected from students, ignoring faculty, leadership, or university-wide processes

Purpose-Driven Data Collection

A clearly defined purpose makes identity data easier to use, supports meaningful institutional action, and leads to measurable changes over time. Before collecting data, consider the evidence underlying the inequities being examined, who is affected, and how data will be used to guide future actions

Indigenous Data Sovereignty

When working with Indigenous identity data, Indigenous rights to data sovereignty including the First Nations principles of ownership, control, access, and possession (OCAP) must be recognized and respected. The collection, analysis, and use of Indigenous identity data should be separate from other EDI efforts and involve Indigenous community members in its development.
