On the recommendation of Dean Jane Philpott, Teri Shearer, Interim Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) at Queen’s University, has appointed Dr. Khaled Zaza as Interim Head, Department of Oncology, effective June 1, 2023. His appointment is effective until December 31, 2023; or until such time that a new head is appointed.
Dean Philpott extends her sincere gratitude to Dr. Scott Berry for his transformational leadership of the Department of Oncology since 2019. Dr. Berry’s impact included expanding the international scope of the department by founding the Global Oncology program.
Dr. Zaza earned his Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery, Master’s degree in Radiation Oncology, and Doctorate degree in Radiation Oncology from Cairo University in Egypt. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada and obtained his certification by examination in Radiation Oncology. In 2006, he joined Queen’s Department of Oncology and the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario at Kingston General Hospital. He became an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Oncology in 2018. At Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC), he has served as Chair, Division of Radiation Oncology, since 2021, and is interim Co-Program Medical Director for the cancer program.
An accomplished Radiation Oncologist, Dr. Zaza brings a wealth of frontline experience to his role, including his current service as Head, Radiation Treatment Program, KHSC and Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario and Regional Radiation Quality Lead. Dr. Zaza’s professional contributions include introducing and implementing Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy and leading innovations and advances in head and neck practice at Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario, as well as paving the way to Head and Neck Cancer trial participation.
