On the recommendation of Dean Lisa Tannock, Matthew Evans, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic), has appointed Dr. John Flannery, as Head, Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation for Queen’s Health Sciences (QHS) and Providence Care Hospital (PCH). His five-year term will begin July 1, 2026.
Dean Tannock would like to sincerely thank current department head Dr. Stephen Bagg, who stepped into the role on an interim basis last year. Dr. Bagg has offered tremendous leadership during his tenure and his long history of service to the department.
Dr. Flannery joins QHS from the University of Toronto and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute with an extensive leadership legacy. He was associate professor in the Division of Physiatry, and medical director of the Musculoskeletal Program and the Comprehensive Integrated Pain Program. As residency program director at University of Toronto, he oversaw significant expansion of residency training and fellowship programs. A leader in interprofessional and scalable education, Dr. Flannery spearheaded the national implementation of ECHO (Extension of Community Healthcare Outcomes), a case-based, interprofessional education model that empowers primary care providers to better manage complex health conditions within their local communities.
Dr. Flannery’s clinical work has spanned the gamut of neurologic rehabilitation and spinal cord injury, to musculoskeletal and amputation, to a recent focus on chronic pain rehabilitation care. His clinical, administrative, and educational roles have also supported research focused on the care, treatment, and long-term outcomes of critically ill patients as well as innovative system-based care. Most recently, he served in a locum role in the musculoskeletal programs at QHS and PCH.
This appointment marks Dr. Flannery’s return to Queen’s, where he earned his MD and served as captain of the Queen’s Gaels football team, and later completed his residency training.
Please join Dean Tannock in congratulating Dr. Flannery on his appointment.
