The Department of Medicine has launched their new Reducing Barriers Bursary at Queen’s University, with overwhelming support from the Department of Medicine’s faculty members. The bursary was established in February 2021 by the Southeastern Ontario Academic Medical Organization (SEAMO) on behalf of the SEAMO Department of Medicine Physicians. This bursary will be awarded to incoming students entering their first year of a degree program in the School of Medicine.
The Reducing Barriers Bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and will help students reduce the financial barriers that may hinder their ability to pursue an education in medicine. Recipients of the bursary will be eligible to renew it for three subsequent years given that they maintain a satisfactory academic standing.
Preference will be given to incoming students who self-identify as Black Canadian or Visible Minority/Racialized students. The Department of Medicine hopes that the Reducing Barriers Bursary will support the movement to bring about equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in medicine. The Bursary was created in alignment with the Faculty of Health Sciences’ several new EDI initiatives.
