Dean Jane Philpott is pleased to announce that Matthew Evans, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) at Queen’s University, has extended Dr. Ruzica Jokic for a one-year term as Assistant Dean, Distributed Medical Education for Queen’s Health Sciences. Dr. Jokic’s new term begins July 1, 2024.
Dr. Jokic first served a five-year term in the role beginning October 1, 2018 and was initially extended until June 30, 2024.
Dr. Jokic earned her MD from the University of Belgrade in 1983, and then went on to complete her specialist training in Internal Medicine there as well. After coming to Canada, she trained as a psychiatrist, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2003. After completing her training, she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Saskatchewan from 2003 to 2004 before moving to Queen’s.
At Queen’s, Dr. Jokic was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry from 2004 to 2011, when she was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor. In 2016, she was granted tenure at the university. Since coming to Queen’s, she has taken on an increasing level of responsibility in medical education, serving in positions such as the Postgraduate Program Director in the Department of Psychiatry from 2009 to 2016. She has taken on other leadership roles at Queen’s as well, including serving as Deputy Head of the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Jokic is the Clinical Director of the Mood Disorder Research and Treatment Service at Providence Care and has been in this role since 2008.
Outside of Queen’s, Dr. Jokic has taken on leadership roles in national organizations.
For instance, she was a member of the Specialty Committee on Psychiatric Education for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada from 2009 to 2016 and member of the RCPSC Examination Board since 2014. Dr. Jokic also served as the Chair of the Coordinators of Psychiatric Education of Canada (COPE) from 2014 to 2016. Since 2023, Dr. Jokic has been Co-chair for Distributed Medical Education at the Council of Clinical Faculties of Ontario (COFM).
A valued member of the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Jokic has earned several awards from the department, including the Mentorship Award in 2012, the Exemplary Service to the Department Award in 2016, and the Outstanding Contribution to Postgraduate Education Award in 2017.
