On the recommendation of Dean Jane Philpott, Dr. Matthew Evans, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic), has appointed Dr. Roger Pilon as Vice-Dean (Health Sciences) and Director, School of Nursing, effective July 1, 2024, for a five-year term.
Dean Philpott extends her sincere gratitude to Dr. Erna Snelgrove-Clarke who served in this role for the past five years. Her leadership, passion and pursuit of excellence have contributed to the school’s growth—not only in the number of students and faculty—but in strength. It has become more inclusive and welcoming, and focused on student well-being and achievement, which has also helped grow its reputation nationally.
Dr. Pilon joined the faculty in 2021 as Associate Professor and maintained clinical practice as a Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner at Student Wellness Services. Before joining Queen’s Health Sciences (QHS), he was Director, School of Nursing at Laurentian University. Recently, he held the roles of Acting Vice-Dean (Health Sciences) and Director, School of Nursing and Associate Director, Graduate Master Programs at QHS.
After earning his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Laurentian University, Dr. Pilon pursued further education in outpost and community health nursing at Dalhousie University and was one of the first graduates in Ontario of the Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner certificate program at Laurentian. He later pursued his Master’s and PhD at Laurentian, specializing in rural and northern health.
In his clinical and research work, he has focused on Indigenous health, specifically in advancing the decolonization of type-2 diabetes care. Dr. Pilon has also helped lead several community-focused initiatives since joining Queen’s, including the Periwinkle Health Home and Well Baby Care Clinic. He maintains close ties to First Nations communities along the north shore of Lake Huron and works frequently with colleagues at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and McMaster Universities on Indigenous health research related to type-2 diabetes, dementia care, and intimate partner violence.
He received the 2021 Council of Ontario Programs in Nursing Excellence in Teaching Award and has taught and designed several courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels. He is a Canadian Certified Nurse Educator and is a highly respected and compassionate teacher.
Please join Dean Philpott in congratulating Dr. Pilon on his appointment.
