On the recommendation of Dean Jane Philpott, Matthew Evans, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) at Queen’s University, has reappointed Dr. Omar Islam as Head, Department of Diagnostic Radiology, effective July 1, 2024 for a five-year term.
Over the past five years as Head, Dr. Islam has led initiatives to expand imaging services to remote communities as well as advance global health and radiology education in collaboration with the University of Nairobi, Kenya. He has spearheaded international symposiums and other continuing education and professional development opportunities for faculty and learners across QHS and Kingston Health Sciences Centre.
After earning his MD from the University of Toronto, Dr. Islam completed his internship in internal medicine and surgery and his residency in radiology at Queen’s. After finishing his residency, he completed a fellowship in neuroradiology at Yale University. He earned a Certificate of Specialization in Executive Leadership in Health Care from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Harvard University. Dr. Islam joined QHS as an Assistant Professor in 2001 and is promoted to Associate Professor effective July 1, 2024.
Dr. Islam is the regional imaging lead for Cancer Care Ontario. He has served in a professional capacity with several different organizations and medical corporations including the Canadian Heads of Academic Radiology, American Society of Neuroradiology, Ontario Health Diagnostic Imaging Advisory Committee, Sentry Health, Friends of Parkinson’s and Medicotec. He is also the co-founder and co-editor-in-chief of Portable MRI Journal and is a member of the Connected Minds research project. In 2006, he co-founded Canadian Teleradiology Services Inc., one of Canada's premier teleradiology companies.
For close to 20 years, Dr. Islam has been a member of the Examination Board in Diagnostic Radiology for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and for the past three years has served as an Examiner for the National Assessment Collaboration Exam by the Medical Council of Canada. Recently, he received the Glenn Sawyer Service Award from the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) in recognition of significant service to the OMA, medical profession, or public at the community level.
Dr. Islam’s research has appeared in peer-reviewed journals, such as Neurology, American Journal of Neuroradiology, and the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences. He has also presented his work at many conferences and continuing medical education programs globally.
