On the recommendation of Dean Jane Philpott, Mark Green, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) at Queen’s University has appointed Dr. Michael Leveridge as Head, Department of Urology. Dr. Leveridge’s five-year term begins on July 1, 2022.

Dean Philpott would like to extend her gratitude to Dr. Robert Siemens, for his visionary leadership as Head, Department of Urology. Dr. Siemens leaves the department having strengthened its research mission and clinical service, and in an excellent position to continue to meet its strategic objectives.

In his new role, Dr. Leveridge is responsible for the administration of both clinical and academic programs, as well as the management and advancement of the department’s core clinical, and core academic activities. His core responsibilities will include partnerships, external funding, and quality improvement. He will also be charged with implementing the Queen’s Health Sciences (QHS) strategic plan, Radical Collaboration, across the department, including a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, Indigeneity, and accessibility (EDIIA), and a focus on interdisciplinary research. Dr Leveridge’s ongoing role as service head of urology at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) positions him well to expand what is already a strong relationship, and will help integrate emerging technologies and techniques into the department’s educational programming.

Dr. Leveridge earned his medical degree at the University of Toronto before completing a residency in Urology at Queen’s University. He returned to the University of Toronto where he completed a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at Princess Margaret Hospital. Dr. Leveridge is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Urology and Oncology. Additionally, he acts as the Undergraduate Medical Education Lead in the Department of Urology and the Residency Program Director for the urology training program.

Dr. Leveridge has an extensive history of academic achievement, with over 60 peer reviewed publications. His research interests include population level-research in bladder cancer and testicular cancer outcomes, as well as the study of the use and value of social media in urology. Dr. Leveridge’s clinical focus is urologic oncology and general oncology practice. He is a practicing physician at KHSC and the Lennox & Addington General Hospital in Napanee.

Dr. Leveridge has served in several leadership roles at Queen’s University and beyond. Currently, Dr. Leveridge is the Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Urological Association Journal, and an Associate Editor for the BJUI Knowledge. He holds memberships with several organizations including the Canadian Kidney Cancer Research Network and the Canadian Urological Research Consortiums.

Dr. Leveridge’s work has been recognized with numerous awards and honours. During his fellowship at Queen’s, he was the recipient of the Morales Award for Outstanding Resident Research. Since joining QHS as a faculty member, Dr. Leveridge’s outstanding dedication to medical education has earned him a Certificate of Merit from the Canadian Association for Medical Education, and two Excellence in Clinical Teaching Awards from QHS. Dr. Leveridge has been recognized for his teaching by seven different classes of medical students at Queen’s University. He is the three-time recipient of the Pearls of Wisdom lecture selection/invitation, and in 2022, was awarded the Aesculapian Society Lectureship Award for the fifth consecutive year.

“My work as an educator has been my defining role within Team Urology,” says Dr. Leveridge. “Queen’s has developed an outsized reputation as fertile soil for the development of excellent applicant cohorts who become excellent and reliable residents and urologists. This is a longstanding success of our group, and I look forward to keeping education, the successes of our trainees and the excellence of our teachers as top priorities in my role as department head.”

In his new position, Dr. Leveridge’s goals include expanding faculty training opportunities, capital acquisition, new hires and “collaboration with regional partners that will expand the footprint of comprehensive, top-tier urologic care to the communities of southeastern Ontario and beyond.”

Please join the Dean in congratulating Dr. Michael Leveridge on his appointment.
