Dr. Diane Lougheed appointed as Vice-Dean (Clinical), School of Medicine and Medical Director of Southeastern Ontario Academic Medical Organization (SEAMO)

On the recommendation of Dean Jane Philpott, Mark Green, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) at Queen’s University, has appointed Dr. Diane Lougheed as Vice-Dean (Clinical), School of Medicine and Medical Director of Southeastern Ontario Academic Medical Organization (SEAMO). Her appointment is effective December 1, 2021 for a five-year term.

Dean Philpott and Mr. George Thomson, Chair of the SEAMO Governing Committee, extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Stephen Vanner for his exceptional leadership as Interim Vice-Dean from February 1 to November 30, 2021. During his tenure, Dr. Vanner demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the position, approaching it with unrelenting resolve. The strategic vision that Dr. Vanner brought to his role has left both the faculty and SEAMO in excellent positions.

Dr. Lougheed earned a BSc in Human Kinetics with distinction at University of Guelph in 1983. She earned her MD and completed her internal medicine residency at McMaster University. She completed her respirology fellowship at Queen’s University and obtained a Certificate of Special Competence in Respiratory Medicine through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1992. In 1999, she earned an MSc in Community Health and Epidemiology at Queen’s University.

Dr. Lougheed joined Queen’s University as faculty member in 1993 in the Division of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Currently, Dr. Lougheed serves as a Professor and Chair of the Division of Respirology and Sleep Medicine in the Department of Medicine, is cross-appointed to the Departments of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences and Public Health Sciences, and is a Senior Adjunct Scientist at ICES. She serves as a consultant in Respirology for the Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC), and Providence Care Hospital and is Director and Medical Advisor for the Asthma Program, Asthma Education Centre, and Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic at KHSC.

Dr. Lougheed is a respected researcher and clinician scholar. She has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and her research in asthma symptom perception, epidemiology and chronic cough has received over $24M in funding. She is the founder of the Asthma Research Unit within the KHSC Clinical Research Centre. In 2006, she received the Queen’s University Department of Medicine Award for Excellence in Research. She currently serves as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Respiratory, Clinical Care and Sleep Medicine for the Canadian Thoracic Society.

Dr. Lougheed is a highly respected leader both in Canada and internationally. She has led several significant projects, having sat on more than 50 provincial and national boards and committees. She is a past Chair of the Canadian Thoracic Society’s (CTS) Asthma Clinical Assembly, past President of CTS. She is also a past Co-Chair of the American College of Chest Physicians’ Scientific Program and a past CTS Representative to the European Respiratory Society. As a testament to hear extraordinary leadership, in 2020, she earned a Certificate in Leadership for Medical Women from Joule Physician Leadership Institute, Canadian Medical Association.
