Dr. Bradley Stoner appointed as Head, Department of Public Health Sciences

On the recommendation of search committee chair Dr. Michael Kawaja and with the support of Dean Richard Reznick, Mark Green, Provost and Vice Principal (Academic) at Queen’s University, has appointed Dr. Bradley Stoner as Head, Department of Public Health Sciences for the Faculty of Health Sciences. His appointment will be effective October 1, 2020.

Dean Reznick would like to extend his sincere thanks to Dr. Duncan Hunter for his service and leadership as Interim Head of the Department of Public Health Sciences. Dr. Hunter has served in this role since 2018, and thanks to his dedication and guidance, the department is well positioned to continue advancing its mission.

Dr. Stoner earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology at Harvard University, followed by a Master of Arts in Medical Anthropology from McGill University. He earned his MD degree from Indiana University, and also received his PhD in Anthropology at the same institution. Dr. Stoner completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Duke University and a postgraduate fellowship in Infectious Disease at University of Washington. Since 1995, Dr. Stoner has served as a faculty member in Anthropology and Internal Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. He currently directs the Medicine and Society program in medical anthropology and public health. He completed a sabbatical appointment to the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, as Visiting Medical Officer, HIV and Reproductive Health in 2005.

An active researcher, Dr. Stoner is widely published in the fields of sexual and reproductive health. Research interests include the social formation of sickness and health, political economy of health, anthropology of sexually transmitted infections (STI) and HIV, medical pluralism, and healthcare decision-making. His unique expertise in ethnographic assessment and community engagement informs research aimed to better understand barriers and facilitators of STI/HIV care and prevention within urban and minority communities. He is currently co-Principal Investigator and/or Project Director for research supported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with support totaling more than $6 million for Capacity Building Assistance for HIV Prevention and STI/HIV Prevention Training.

As an acknowledged authority on social and political influences on public health and STI epidemiology and prevention, Dr. Stoner has been invited to present widely across North America. He is Past-President of the American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association (ASTDA), and currently serves as Regional Director for the International Union Against Sexually Transmitted Infections (IUSTI). He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.
