They say all endings are really new beginnings. As the Queen’s community prepares to say farewell to Jane Philpott, she is leaving a parting gift that will have a lasting impact long after her time at Queen’s and SEAMO.
The Jane Philpott Primary Care Fund has been established to support initiatives and research advancing primary health care through the Health Services and Policy Research Institute (HSPRI). The Fund was seeded with over $65,000 in fees and honoraria Dr. Philpott received from speaking appearances related to her best-selling book, “Health for All: A Doctor’s Prescription for a Healthier Canada.” Effective December 1, 2024, Dr. Philpott will become chair of Ontario’s new Primary Care Action Team with a mandate to connect 100 per cent of Ontarians to comprehensive primary care.
“I am thrilled to launch this fund to support the work of HSPRI in primary care. I have learned so much during my time at Queen’s; lessons I will take with me into my new role, including how to grow and nurture the health workforce,” says Dr. Philpott. “I am grateful to everyone within the Queen’s community. I have really loved my time here and I’m happy I can give back in this way.”
In addition to the fund, she is leaving behind an impressive list of accomplishments that have transformed health sciences education, research, and enhanced clinical care in the community. From a ‘radical collaboration’ strategic plan to a new program to train family doctors at Lakeridge Health, to expanding partnerships in the Weeneebayko region to train Indigenous youth in health sciences careers, to a $25M gift to cancer research, the work accomplished during Dean Philpott’s term will continue to make a difference in creating a healthier world.
For those wishing to contribute to the Jane Philpott Primary Care Fund, donations can be made online with an option to dedicate your gift to Dr. Philpott. Gifts are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.
“I have seen the innovation, passion, resilience and determination from everyone at QHS and I know nothing will stand in the way of them achieving ambitious goals,” says Dr. Philpott. “You can be sure I will be a fierce cheerleader for the people of Queen’s and SEAMO long after I’m dean, and I look forward to new initiatives and advances to come from the fund.”
Dr. Philpott’s completes her term as dean of Queen’s Health Sciences, director of the School of Medicine, and CEO of the Southeastern Ontario Academic Medical Organization (SEAMO), on Nov. 30, 2024.
