Queen’s Health Sciences is pleased to congratulate Dr. Stephen Archer on his recent appointment to the Order of Canada. Announced by the Governor General, the Order of Canada recognizes those “whose outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation have enriched the lives of others and made a difference to Canada.”
An internationally acclaimed cardiologist, professor in the Department of Medicine at Queen’s, and Director Translational Institute of Medicine, Dr. Archer is celebrated for his groundbreaking discoveries in pulmonary arterial hypertension and for translating fundamental insights into therapies that have improved patient care worldwide. His research into mitochondrial biology as a regulator of oxygen sensing, cell proliferation and apoptosis has opened new therapeutic avenues not only for pulmonary hypertension but for cancer and for understanding lung injury in COVID-19.
A proud Queen’s graduate (Meds ’81), he combines clinical practice with a CIHR-funded research program that has produced more than 300 publications, an H-index of 113 and over 50,000 citations.
The appointment honours Dr. Archer’s extraordinary impact on cardiovascular science, his commitment to translating discoveries into clinical care, and his mentorship of more than 75 trainees.
