On the recommendation of Dean Lisa Tannock, Matthew Evans, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic), has appointed Dr. Kyla Caners, as Head, Department of Emergency Medicine for Queen’s Health Sciences and Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC). Her five-year term will begin June 1, 2026.
Queen’s and KHSC would like to sincerely thank current department head Dr. David Messenger for his outstanding commitment to leadership. Dr. Messenger led his team through unprecedented challenges during COVID-19 and has played a pivotal role in advocating for emergency medical care in the region.
Dr. Caners joined Queen's Health Sciences in 2021 from McMaster University, where she completed her emergency medicine residency and spent five years as a faculty member. In addition to her academic work, she currently serves as an emergency physician at KHSC and as simulation lead in Queen’s Department of Emergency Medicine.
A nationally recognized leader in simulation-based medical education, Dr. Caners founded emsimcases.com, an international peer-reviewed emergency medicine simulation database. She is an expert in coordinating and implementing simulation as a change management tool, and using experiential learning to strengthen clinical systems and improve patient safety. Currently, she is completing a Global Executive MBA in Healthcare and the Life Sciences at the Rotman School of Management.
