Are the courses offered online?

Yes, the majority of courses are held weekly on interactive videoconferencing software. You are expected to sign into class once a week for 2.5 - 3 hours. There are two (2) in-person intensive weeks in the program; one in September of first year, and one in July between first and second year.

What are the dates and times of the classes?

First-year courses are usually held on either Monday or Tuesday evenings. Second-year courses are usually held on either Wednesday or Thursday evenings. Your annual academic schedule will be released during the summer prior to the beginning of term. The classes are held one (1) day per week in the evenings (EST).

How many hours per week can I expect to spend on coursework?

Each class runs for approximately 2.5 - 3 hours per week. Additionally you can also expect to spend 10 - 15 hours per week to work on your course work depending on deadlines and group assignments.

Does the program run year-round for two (2) years?

Yes, the program runs year-round for two (2) years. Students complete the final course in the summer term and graduate in November.

Can I accelerate through the program?

No. This program is a part-time online program with no full-time stream.

Can I complete the MScHQ and PhDHQ simultaneously or continuously?

No. You cannot complete the two (2) programs simultaneously or continuously. The MScHQ is a part-time two (2) year professional program, while the PhDHQ program is a full-time four (4) year research program.

Is it a thesis-based Master's program?

No. It is a course-based Master’s program.

What are the career prospects for new graduates?

Our alumni have been promoted into leadership roles, accepted new positions, or enhanced their current capacity in healthcare quality, risk and safety fields. Health quality, risk, and safety is an emerging field and our alumni have been very successful with job prospects.

Are any bursaries or funding opportunities I can apply for?

There are currently no program specific funding opportunities offered at this time but we do encourage applicants to seek external sources of funding via grants, employers, etc. Please note that our program is not eligible for OSAP as it is a part-time, professional program.

Regarding external grants and funding, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada does offer some opportunities to those who may be eligible. In the past some MScHQ students who are Fellows have successfully applied for and received the College's professional development funding. If you are have been approved for this grant and require a supervisor/mentor/instructor to complete the grant conditions, please contact hqprograms@queensu.ca and we will direct your email to the appropriate contacts.
