Dr. Roger Pilon is Vice-Dean, Health Sciences, and Director of the School of Nursing. After earning his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Laurentian University, Dr. Pilon pursued further education in outpost and community health nursing at Dalhousie University and was one of the first graduates in Ontario of the Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner certificate program at Laurentian. He later pursued his Master’s and PhD at Laurentian, specializing in rural and northern health. He received the 2021 Council of Ontario Programs in Nursing Excellence in Teaching Award and has taught and designed several courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels. He is a Canadian Certified Nurse Educator and is a highly respected and compassionate teacher.
Research Interests
In his clinical and research work, he has focused on Indigenous health, specifically in advancing the decolonization of type-2 diabetes care. Dr. Pilon has also helped lead several community-focused initiatives since joining Queen’s, including the Periwinkle Health Home and Well Baby Care Clinic. He maintains close ties to First Nations communities along the north shore of Lake Huron and works frequently with colleagues at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and McMaster Universities on Indigenous health research related to type-2 diabetes, dementia care, and intimate partner violence.
