Dr. Sarah Funnell has been named President of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Board of Directors. She is the first Indigenous president in the organization’s history and will serve in the role for a one-year term.
Dr. Funnell is the Associate Dean, Indigenous Health, Chair, Indigenous Health and Assistant Professor, Department of Family Medicine at Queen’s Health Sciences. She is an award-winning educator and active speaker whose research focuses on food sovereignty and Indigenous population health.
“I’m committed to listening, learning, and collaborating with members, partners, and patients to improve primary care across Canada and to advancing reconciliation in our health systems,” says Dr. Funnell on her appointment.
“I approach this year with humility. In leadership this means inviting divergent voices into decision-making circles, sharing credit, and being accountable when we get things wrong. I look forward to hearing from members all over the nation and helping to build a CFPC that serves members.”
The CFPC represents more than 46,000 members across the country and provides high-quality services, supports family medicine teaching and research, and advocates on behalf of the specialty of family medicine, family physicians, and the patients they serve. Dr. Funnell has served on the Board since 2020 and has been an active volunteer with the CFPC since her time in family medicine residency.
