On the recommendation of Dean Jane Philpott, Matthew Evans, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) at Queen’s University, has appointed Dr. Leslie Flynn as Interim Head, Department of Psychiatry, effective September 1, 2023. Her appointment is effective until June 30, 2024 or until such time that a new head is appointed.
Dean Philpott extends her sincere gratitude to Dr. Claudio Soares for guiding the Department of Psychiatry since 2017. Under his leadership, the Department has expanded significantly its clinical deliverables and excelled in educational deliverables and research productivity.
Dr. Flynn is an award-winning professor (Department of Psychiatry, cross-appointed to Family Medicine) researcher, psychiatrist, and family physician who brings a distinguished leadership track record to her new role. She also holds the role of Co-Director, Master of Health Professions Education.
Her leadership experience at Queen’s includes Director of Continuing Medical Education, Postgraduate Program Director, the Director of Psychotherapy in the Department of Psychiatry, and Co-Director, Master of Health Professions Education and Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education (2003-2010). Until June 2022, Dr. Flynn served as Queen’s Health Sciences Vice-Dean, Education for a decade and was Acting Director of the Office of Health Sciences Education (2011-2014). Dr. Flynn is also a Queen’s alumni (Artsci’78, Meds’87, MEd’15).
Dr. Flynn received Queen’s Distinguished Service Award in 2022 – the latest recognition in a career that has included departmental awards for Excellent Leadership in Education and the Annual Staff Excellence in Teaching Award. Her research specialties include physician health, the role of health advocate, interprofessional education, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
