The Faculty of Health Sciences is pleased to announce that population health expert Dr. Nancy Ross will be joining the Department of Public Health Sciences as a Professor. Dr. Ross has also been appointed as the Vice Principal (Research) for Queen’s University following unanimous approval by the Board of Trustees. She will begin a five-year term in this role on August 1, 2021.
A proud Queen’s alumna, Dr. Ross received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Geography. Dr. Ross obtained her PhD in Geography from McMaster University and subsequently worked as a Senior Research Scientist with Statistics Canada, including as postdoctoral fellow with the Population Health Program of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR). She became a faculty member at McGill University in 2001 and currently holds the position of Associate Vice-Principal (Research and Innovation).
Dr. Ross is a recognized expert in population health, and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair. Her award-winning interdisciplinary research, which she will be continuing in the Faculty of Health Sciences, has been funded mainly by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Dr. Ross is a past Editor-in-chief of Health Reports, Canada’s flagship population health journal, and she currently leads the Geo-Social Determinants of Health Research Group at McGill.
At McGill, she has advanced the institution’s research enterprise by providing strategic advice and counsel. These activities include mentoring researchers during the development of grant applications, leading the implementation of programs designed to increase success in research funding and research intensity, and developing proposals for strategic business and corporate or institutional partnerships worldwide.
At Queen’s, Dr. Ross’s expertise will help to advance innovative research in the Department of Public Health Sciences. As a member of the senior administrative team, she will oversee the Vice-Principal (Research) portfolio, which includes University Research Services, Queen’s Partnership and Innovation, and oversight of University-based Research Centres and Institutes.
