On the recommendation of Dean Jane Philpott, Mark Green, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) at Queen’s University, has appointed Dr. Suzanne K. Bridge as Head, Department of Critical Care Medicine. Her appointment is effective August 1, 2021 for a five-year term.
Dean Philpott would like to recognize Dr. Dan Howes for his service and leadership as Head, Department of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Howes has been an exceptional leader, and his expertise and guidance have successfully navigated the department through an incredibly challenging time with the onset and duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Bridge earned her BSc (Honours) in Life Sciences and MSc in Pharmacology and Toxicology at Queen’s University. She earned her Doctor of Medicine in 2005 and completed residency in Internal Medicine in 2009 at University of Toronto. Dr. Bridge completed a clinical fellowship in Adult Critical Care Medicine at Stanford University in 2011.
Dr. Bridge was appointed as Lecturer, Department of Medicine at University of Toronto in 2011. At this time, she also served as Lead Education Preceptor, Oshawa Critical Care Medicine Program and Adjunct Assistant Professor for Queen’s University. In 2015, she was appointed Assistant Professor, Department of Critical Care Medicine with cross-appointment to Department of Medicine at Queen’s University.
Dr. Bridge is an experienced leader and administrator. She is the Competency-Based Medical Education Lead for the Department of Critical Care Medicine at Queen’s, and led the department’s successful Training Program Accreditation with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) in 2018. She chairs the Residency Program Committee, Critical Care Medicine Competence Committee, , and is Director, Critical Care Medicine Residency and Fellowship Program. As Deputy Head, Department of Critical Care Medicine since 2019 and through the pandemic, Dr. Bridge has helped lead her team in preparedness initiatives and crisis resource management. Beyond Queen’s, Dr. Bridge serves on the RCPSC Specialty Committee in Critical Care Medicine and the Society of Critical Care Medicine Ultrasound Committee.
Dr. Bridge is an exceptional clinician who is committed to excellent patient care. She has been awarded the Sopman Humanitarian Award, CBD Innovator Certificate of Excellence (RSPSC) and the Betty Stewart Sisam Award for understanding and care for welfare of patients. She has been twice nominated by peers and trainees for the Canadian Medical Association Certificate of Merit Award and the PARO Residency Program Excellence Award.
