Black Histories & Futures Month: Sharing resources and knowledge

To help promote Black flourishing at Queen’s Health Sciences, and in recognition of Black Histories and Futures Month (BHFM), here are some resources and information of interest to the QHS community.

BHFM Poster Display & Calendar of events

Visit the atrium of the School of Medicine Building during the month of February to view the art poster display produced by the Queen’s Black Medical Students Association. To see what else is happening throughout February in the Kingston region, check out the online calendar.

Anti-Black racism and medical education 

Dr. Mala Joneja, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine has published an article in a recent issue of Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ – October 24, 2022), Anti-Black racism and medical education: a curricular framework for acknowledging and learning from past mistakes. The article gives an overview of how anti-racist curriculum was built into the Department and how the Framework can be adapted to be used across other medical schools.

Canadian Black Nurses Alliance (CBNA) 

Learn about the new Queen’s chapter of the Canadian Black Nursing Alliance and plan to attend their upcoming webinars:

  • Black Voices in Nursing – February 10 at 4:30 p.m. Mac Corry D214 (Register) Featuring a panel presentation by CBNA founder and director, Ovie Onagbeboma and Queen’s PhD student and nurse practitioner Pauline Bleah-Neuwon.
  • Black Voices in Healthcare – March 3 at 4:30 p.m. Jeffery Room 234 (Register) Focusing on the Black experience and interprofessional collaboration. Speakers include Dr. Afolasade Fakolade, Associate Professor, School of Rehabilitation Therapy, Daria Juudi-Hope, Director of Nursing at Shibogama First Nations Council 

Black Physicians of Canada

This website features ways we can address anti-Black racism in medicine in Canada as well as details on initiatives and related articles. You will also find an extensive resources section with links to provincial Black Physicians’ Associations and Students’ Associations (post-secondary and secondary) and a section devoted to the Canadian Black Physician Wellness Project. Of note is a link to the Association of Black Psychologists self-care tool kit that features information on how to address stress and trauma associated with the effects of racism and cultural trauma.  

Check out the section with information specifically for allies on how they can help address anti-Black racism, and ways to support Black peers, colleagues and students.

Ontario Rehab Alliance Black Network

Learn more about the ORA Black Network and how they are working to address anti-Black racism and promote inclusion and equity. They share a curated list of resources as well as links to past webinars.
