February is Black History Month, which celebrates the history and legacy of Black Canadians and their communities.
At QHS, we also recognize that today’s success stories are tomorrow’s history. This month, we are honouring the achievements and perspectives of both past and present Black students, faculty, and alumni.
Feature Stories: Throughout February, you will find new interviews on the QHS homepage that highlight Black excellence and the work of Black alumni, faculty, and learners, including:
-
Dr. Lanval Daly (Meds ‘71). Dr. Daly is the oldest living black graduate after the school’s ban on black students was lifted in 1965. He reflects on his Queen’s and Kingston experience and discusses everything from racism in the healthcare sector to equity, diversity and inclusion in education and health institutions.
-
Dr. Maxine Clarke, a retired professor from the Department of Pediatrics and a member of Dean’s Action Table on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, talks about her career and current QHS EDI efforts.
-
PhD student researcher Deborah Francis discusses her narrative inquiry of a Canadian university told by racialized students.
Social Media: Keep an eye on QHS’s Twitter, Facebook and Instagram channels throughout February as we explore the contributions and impact of our Black community, past and present.
