Queen’s Clinical Simulation Centre celebrates RCPSC accreditation

This afternoon we celebrated a significant milestone for the Faculty of Health Sciences – the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s accreditation of our Clinical Simulation Centre (CSC).

We are all immigrants

I remember well one of the best teaching sessions I ever had with surgical clerks. This session happened many years ago when I was a surgeon at the Toronto General Hospital. As was often the protocol, one of the senior medical students started rounds by presenting a case. I recall that the patient had been admitted with a small bowel obstruction. When reviewing the history and physical, the student made the comment that the history of the present illness was a bit fragmented because the patient “had a language problem.”

Troubling times ahead for capacity building as the CIHR cuts the MD/PhD Awards Program

For the last several years, our School of Medicine has offered our students the exceptional opportunity to combine research training with a medical education through our MD/PhD-MD/Master’s program. This unique program provides benefits to both scholarship and the professional development of physician-scientists by allowing for better integration of clinical and research training experiences, and also provides better opportunities for fostering translational research.

Welcoming the new faces of the FHS to Queen’s

After three weeks away from the office, I must admit, it’s nice to be back! The end of August is always an extremely busy time at universities across the country, yet I always look forward to those first few days of school.

Over the next week or so, I’ll be making the rounds to a number of events, hoping to meet many of the new students joining us this year.  Although the pace never really slows too much in our office, September is nevertheless a time to celebrate renewal.

A simple summer vacation

It’s been a busy year! Like most of us, I’m looking forward to that first day of summer vacation when I can close down the computer, shut off the cell phone, and hopefully have no agenda. I promise to try hard to accomplish all three (although I’m not 100% confident that I will succeed).

Respecting the needs and wants of the elderly and the frail

Duncan Sinclair is emeritus professor of physiology, a fellow of the School of Policy Studies of Queen’s University, and the former dean of our Faculty of Health Sciences. He recently joined the board of TVN, Canada’s frailty health network, and wasinducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in April. This piece was originally printed in the Globe and Mail on July 14th, 2015.

Closing the QCIPA loopholes

On July 1st, Dr. Eric Hoskins, the Minister of Health and Long Term Care made an announcement that the Ministry would begin to work on implementing each and every recommendation put forth by an expert panel charged with reviewing the Quality of Care Information Protection Act (QCIPA).

Queen’s preparing to launch online Honours Bachelor of Science

Over the last few years, we have been fortunate in the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) to launch a number of new programs. This past fall, we saw the first Masters of Science in Healthcare Quality class graduate, and this September, we will welcome our first set of students in our brand new Aging and Health graduate diploma and masters programs.
