URGENT: LOCUM ANESTHESIOLOGISTS NEEDED

The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine of Queen’s University and the Kingston Health Sciences Centre has an urgent need for locum anesthesiologists between now and December 2018.  Qualified candidates must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and possess a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons fellowship, or equivalent.

Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME)

Since its official opening in 2005, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) has developed and delivered a distinctive, world-recognized model of distributed, community-engaged and socially accountable medical education and research. NOSM serves as the Faculty of Medicine of both Lakehead University in Thunder Bay and Laurentian University in Sudbury, with teaching and research sites across Northern Ontario – making the entire region its campus.

The Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education is a member of the NOSM Executive Group, together with the Dean, the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Vice Dean Academic, and the other Associate Deans, and is jointly accountable for the achievement of academic and non-academic objectives of NOSM. The Associate Dean is also a member of the School’s Strategic Academic Leadership Team.

Reporting to the Vice Dean Academic, this medical education leader oversees and provides strategic direction for all Postgraduate Medical Education activities and programs. This includes program development and evaluation, accreditation oversight, assessment of learners, curriculum design, administrative staff management, and budget development and management for nine residency programs and the Postgraduate Education Portfolio. The Associate Dean recruits, hires, mentors and manages approximately 100 Postgraduate stipendiary faculty leaders across Northern Ontario, supports Residency Program Directors in their roles, liaises with all other educational programs at NOSM to optimize use of resources, and provides leadership in securing funding for strategic postgraduate initiatives, including grants and government funds to further residency programs.

As a learning-centred and progressive leader who understands funding models and governing fiscal responsibility, the Associate Dean will be familiar with adult education principles and program and curriculum design. An excellent relationship builder and with strong partnerships externally and internally, the Associate Dean will liaise with NOSM-affiliated Academic Health Sciences Centres and other Northern Ontario teaching sites, and advocate for NOSM’s postgraduate programs locally, provincially and nationally. Keeping abreast of educational and accreditation initiatives that may impact the postgraduate environment, the Associate Dean will oversee and ensure a continuous quality improvement (CQI) approach to accreditation in all residency programs.

A successful candidate for this role is a practicing physician with significant leadership experience in medical education in a Canadian university setting, and qualifications for a faculty appointment in the Clinical Sciences Division at NOSM. Candidates should have a proven track record in developing, managing and implementing medical school curriculum in an accredited medical school at the postgraduate level, ideally in a distributed, community-based environment. Candidates will also have knowledge of Francophone and Indigenous cultures.

Head, Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Queen’s University and affiliated Teaching Hospitals Kingston, Ontario

Applications are invited for the position of Head of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen’s University and its affiliated teaching hospitals, Kingston Health Sciences Centre and Providence Care. We are searching for an outstanding academic physician with proven administrative experience and strong leadership skills who, as Head, will draw on strong interpersonal and organizational skills to develop and manage teams that will foster excellence in patient care, teaching and research within the Department. The successful candidate be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

The work supported by the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine and its members falls under the clinical, research and educational realms.  The scope of clinical practice is broad and includes provision of operating room anesthetic services for most surgical specialties (Bariatrics, Cardiac (including TAVI), Dental, ENT, Gynecology, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Plastics, Thoracics, Urology, Vascular).  Additional hospital anesthetic services include work done in the acute and chronic pain programs, the cardiac electrophysiology lab, pre-surgical screening, mental health services (ECT), diagnostic and interventional radiology suites, endoscopy, and adult and pediatric oncology.  Historically, pain research, and, more recently, simulation-based research have been strengths.  In addition, the Department has a history of contributing to international multi-centred studies which is enabled by solid research infrastructure. The Department has a strong presence in the medical school at Queen's, both in the areas of undergraduate administration and medical student education. The Department also co-leads with the School of Nursing, the innovative Master of Health Science in Healthcare Quality (MScHQ). The postgraduate anesthesiology residency program has seen the recent successful adoption of competency-based medical education.

Academic Scholars in Medical Education

The School of Medicine at Queen’s University is currently seeking Medical Education Scholars to join an academy of educational leaders, enabling continuous implementation of best principles and leading practices in medical education. Qualified applicants will hold an MD degree (or equivalent), have completed postgraduate qualifications prior to appointment, be eligible for licensure in Ontario and have outstanding emerging or established research programs in medical education. Successful candidates will be provided a minimum of 50% protected time to pursue research activities.
