The Faculty of Health Sciences is pleased to announce that Associate Professor Cheryl Pulling and Dr. Joan Tranmer have been recognized by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) as the 2020 recipients of the CASN Award for Academic Administrative Excellence and the CASN Excellence in Nursing Research Award respectively.
The CASN acts as the voice of nursing education, research and scholarship in Canada. Both awards, which are assigned annually, celebrate contributions to the growth of nursing as a discipline.
The CASN Award for Academic Administrative Excellence recognizes individuals who demonstrate good academic management practices and have developed innovative strategies to strengthen the quality of university nursing programs. Currently the Associate Director of Undergraduate Nursing Programs, Professor Pulling has held many administrative positions in the School of Nursing, Queen’s University since 2003, and has tirelessly advocated for excellence in educational approaches and curricular evaluation. This past year Professor Pulling was instrumental in writing the School of Nursing’s quality assurance program and the CASN accreditation reports. Simultaneously, Professor Pulling has taken a leadership position ensuring student safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, continuing to advocate for the importance of student’s education experiences while supporting the faculty in its transition to virtual modes of course delivery.
The CASN Excellence in Nursing Research Award is presented to individuals who have contributed to the growth of nursing as a science discipline and demonstrate strong commitment to mentoring students and colleagues during the research process. Dr. Joan Tranmer is a nurse scientist and health services researcher who focuses on the determination of health needs and the evaluation of system-level interventions for patients with complex healthcare conditions. Through her research she also aims to understand the factors that contribute to quality work environments for healthcare workers and develop strategies to improve healthcare work environments. Dr. Tranmer has an exceptional publication record of 100 peer reviewed publications and provided almost three decades of service through her many clinical and leadership roles. Dr. Joan Tranmer is currently Director of the Queen’s Nursing and Health Research Office, Site Director of ICES Queen’s and Sally Smith Chair in Nursing.
