Improve access to medical education
For many, the cost of education can be a significant barrier to accessing medical school. Finances play a large part in the pre- and post- admissions process.
MD Candidate Sloane Kowal is one student who has faced financial challenges during her education. Sloane comes from a single parent family where she was raised by the remarkable women in her life. Growing up, her mother worked multiple jobs in order to support their family.
With several of her family members experiencing chronic illnesses, from a young age Sloane became greatly involved in supporting their care and as such, saw the inequalities they faced in receiving healthcare. This was one of her inspirations to pursue a career in medicine. “I want to provide patients with the quality of care I would want for my own family and use the knowledge and opportunities medicine provides to support those from equity-deserving groups,” writes Sloane.
Sloane worked hard throughout her pre-medical journey, taking on a full course load, part-time jobs, and getting involved in her community. Her acceptance to Queen’s medicine was a joyous moment even through the amount of debt she would have to take on during medical school was an intimidating reality.
Sloane was selected for the Queen’s Medical Student Bursary due to her demonstrated financial need and outstanding academic performance. “I truly appreciate receiving this award, as it has allowed me to engage in unpaid opportunities, explore passions of interest, and foster a healthy social life.”
There are many deserving students whose potential could benefit from the financial support the Queen’s Medical Student Bursary provides. “The financial aid that I received has greatly contributed to supporting me towards my dream career” says Sloane. “In supporting students from equity-deserving groups in working towards their goals and dreams, we also invest in communities of learners that have so much to offer.”
