PRESENTER: Dr. Les Mackeznie & Mackenzie Lockridge

Mackeznie Lockridge, B.Sc., B.Ed., M.Sc. in Anatomical Sciences, is a STEM educator for elementary and secondary students, and has experience teaching university students during her M.Sc and as a learning facilitator. She has interests in how students learn and exploring innovative ways educators can work towards creating an environment which fosters learning for all.

Dr. Les Mackzenie, Associate Professor and Director of the Pattern II M.Sc. Program in Anatomical Sciences. Over the past decade, Dr. MacKenzie has distinguished himself as an outstanding educator in anatomy. Dr. MacKenzie has received several awards and honors for Excellence in Teaching at Queen's University, attesting to his commitment and innovations in undergraduate education in anatomy. His field of study focuses on pedagogy in anatomical sciences. Teaching is a dynamic process that requires constant revision and skillful manipulation to be successful. Students learn more effectively if they are motivated, interact and engaged (active learning). Thus, the onus is on the teacher to implement strategies that promote and induce active learning that ultimately ends in the student being accountable for their learning. Anatomical Science Education Research: The didactic approach to anatomical sciences is the traditional lecture and lab. A more constructive method, however, is necessary for the majority of the students to become effective learners. I am currently evaluating many different strategies focused on active learning in large classes that are interactive and as practical as possible.

The Health Sciences Education Rounds & Journal Clubs create a forum and community to share and critically discuss current topics of interested in health sciences education & research in a multidisciplinary environment. 

The goal of the program is to provide an enriched social and learning environment for faculty engaged in health sciences education that stimulates an educational discussion.  Participants will be kept up to date on current and relevant evidence-based literature in health sciences education, which can be used to guide their educational practice.
