Core Ethical Principles

 

The goal of excellence in clinical education is fostered by the knowledge of, and adherence to, basic ethical principles. The following ethical principles are derived from current biomedical and professional ethics and are the foundation of the ‘Statement of Ethics’ of the GSK Clinical Education Centre. Under each principle are examples of the principles. These are not exclusive but are to provide guidance for use of the principles.

1. Respect for persons:

Participants (volunteers, students, faculty, staff, guests) in the activities of the GSK Clinical Education Centre will:

  • adhere to the dress code;
  • maintain inter-personal boundaries;
  • avoid making inappropriate remarks or gestures;
  • avoid substance use or abuse.

2. Do good:

Participants in the activities of the GSK Clinical Education Centre will:

  • act in the best interests of all participants;
  • aim for the goals of giving benefit and ensuring the welfare of participants.

3. Do no harm:

Participants in the activities of the GSK Clinical Education Centre will:

  • avoid emotional, psychological, social, economic or physical harm;
  • follow the designated policies and procedures of the GSKCEC;
  • adhere to delineated student limitations: including ensuring that no treatment is provided, no findings are communicated directly to a volunteer, and no health care advice is given.

4. Confidentiality:

Participants in the activities of the GSK Clinical Education Centre will:

  • avoid the use of a volunteer’s name outside the GSKCEC in any context (unless consent has been given by the individual);
  • use a volunteer’s name only in context within the GSKCEC;
  • not discuss a volunteer’s history or physical findings outside the GSKCEC without consent.

5. Excellence:

Participants in the activities of the GSK Clinical Education Centre will:

  • provide a realistic and authentic environment for learning;
  • prepare well and in advance for all interactions;
  • be well informed of current knowledge, attitudes, skills and behaviours in the field and with respect to the interaction.

6. Honesty and Openness:

Participants in the activities of the GSK Clinical Education Centre will:

  • inform all participants of their complete name, title and, if a student or instructor, wear a name tag;
  • inform all participants of the goals and limitations of the interaction and disclose to all participants their level of expertise.

7. Compassion:

Participants in the activities of the GSK Clinical Education Centre will:

  • listen to and acknowledge the feelings of others.

8. Fairness:

Participants in the activities of the GSK Clinical Education Centre will:

  • treat all participants in the GSKCEC with equality;
  • adhere to the common principles of justice.


 

Statement of Ethics

  

As a participant in the activities of the GSK Clinical Education Centre, I acknowledge that I have a duty to uphold the Ethical Principles upon which this Centre was founded.

I understand that I have a moral obligation to respect the dignity and confidentiality of all persons who participate in the workings of the GSK Clinical Education Centre including staff, volunteers, students and teachers.

To all those with whom I come in contact, I will do no harm, only good and I will act fairly, honestly and with compassion.

I will strive for excellence in all matters at all times.
