Dr. Karen Yeates, Dr. Graeme Smith and Dr. Chandra Thayade competed in the partnered CIHR/International Development Research Centre (IDRC) grants process last fall for the Stephen Harper Initiative. A link to the Grand challenges video can be seen here.
The proposal is an implementation science program utilizing the mobile health technology platform being used to detect and manage hypertension in Kilimanjaro (on a project funded by Grand Challenges Canada). The same technology will be implemented in maternal and child health clinics in Tanzania to improve detection of pre-eclampsia, which is the cause of 19% of maternal deaths in Tanzania and in many other parts of Africa.
Co-PI's in this project are Dr. Godfrey Mbaruku (a Tanzanian researcher/obstetrician) who is executive director of Ifakara Health Institute, along with a number of other TZ collaborators as well as Dr. Graeme Smith and Chandra Thayade (Queen's).
